About the Book
The stupendous advancement in methods and techniques of Coal Petrology; especially the application of computers in maceral analysis, reflectometry and fluorescence microscope photometry has added new dimensions to its application in coal and oil industries. Today, it is possible to correlate almost all the critical properties of coal to its petrographic composition. This has made coal petrology an indispensable tool in exploration, mining, beneficiation, marketing and utilization of coal.
This book comprises research papers on fundamental and applied aspects of coal petrography such as methods and techniques of coal petrography, reconstruction of environment of deposition of coals on petrography based models, spectral fluorescence analysis and determination of fluorescence alteration behavior, application of coal petrography in coal utilization processes, petrographic characterization of power coals, application of coal petrography in deducing depth of burial and the relevance of hydrogenation residue petrography in liquefaction of coals. It is expected that this book will be of use to those who are actively engaged in fundamental and applied research on coal and to the students of Geology/Applied Geology, Mining and Ore Dressing.
About the Editor
Dr. M.P. Singh served in Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi as a faculty member since 1980. He worked on various aspects of Coal Petrography and Coal Chemistry for the last 30 years making significant contributions in understanding the surface microstructures, petrographic framework, evolutionary trend, source rock characterization and trace element geochemistry of Indian coals. He initiated the surface microstructural characterization of Indian coals with the help of SEM. He has carried out petrographic characterization and SEM study of Permian coals from Damodar, Rajmahal, Deogarh, Son and Wardha Valley basins, and the Paleogene coals from Jammu, Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. In addition, he has conducted studies on trace element geochemistry of coals belonging to all the major Gondwana and Tertiary basins of the country. He has more than 50 research publications to his credit, which have appeared in Indian and Foreign journals of repute.
Dr. Singh was an associate member of the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology and Fellow/member of a number of Indian Geological Societies. He has extended training and expertise to personnel from Industries, Research Institutes, and Universities from time to time. He has the credit of setting up of an Advanced Coal and Organic Petrology Laboratory endowed with sophisticated microscopic systems for higher research. His research interests include Petrography, Organic Maturation and Source Rock characterization of coals.
