Starting from the definition of estuary, process of formation and classification of estuaries on the basis of salinity and climatic conditions, the book goes on to cover more complex aspects such as circulation, sedimentation, residence time and stratification in estuaries. Physio-chemical and biological properties have been discussed in general along with food-web observed in the estuaries. The resource potential of different Geo-Climatic zones has been described with a diagrammatic presentation of important estuaries wherever possible. Apart from several biological, ecological and other factors affecting fisheries and estuaries, management issues for estuaries have also been dealt with in the publication. Resource conservation, policies, and planning have elaborate presentations along with examples and case studies from various countries of the world. The book satisfies all technical, managerial and geographical questions from the curious mind.

About the Author

Dr. Utpal Bhaumik, Ph.D. from Kurukshetra University, joined ARS under ICAR in 1976. He served CIFRI for more than 35 years in various capacities. He worked on ecology and fisheries of rivers and estuaries of the country especially Hilsa fisheries. He has 200 publications in national and international journals.

Dr. Mrinal Kanti Mukhopadhyay, Ph.D. from Kalyani University in Environmental Science served CIFRI in various research positions. Contributed more than fifty national and international research publications on various aspects of estuarine eco-environment and fisheries.

Dr. Narbada Prasad Shrivastava, Ph.D. from Vidyasagar University served for a short spell in MP Fisheries and thereafter CIFRI for 37 years in different systems like reservoirs, floodplain wetland, river, and estuary. He has a number of publications including Books/Bulletins/Seminar Proceedings and 80 Research papers in national and internationally reputed journals to his credit.

Prof. Anil Prakash Sharma, Director, CIFRI, Barrackpore was also the Vice Chancellor of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. His status as an internationally renowned scientist is recognized from preponderant publications in several national and international journals and also Fellowships of reputed national professional societies awarded to him. He was the President of the Section of ‘Animal, Veterinary and Fishery Sciences’ in 100th Indian Science Congress held in Kolkata during 2013.
