About The Book
A country’s development and growth can be judged through various parameters. Migration, in and out, of the country, is one of them. Internal migration is another. Inter-state migration in India was close to 9 million annually between 2011 and 2016 as per the Economic Survey of India, 2017. Census of India, 2017, reported internal migration at 139 million. Considering rural out-migration is largely driven by factors such as poverty, lack of livelihood opportunities and agrarian distress, the vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers have been captured by many studies. This book, on the other hand, attempts to study the distress of the left-behind women, children, and parents at the source.
Thus, the book analyses ‘distress migration’ in Tamil Nadu, with particular reference to one of the backward districts in the state, viz. Dharmapuri, with the hope that policy makers will tune their attention and intelligence towards people whose problems, till now, have been invisible.
